If we are talking about essentials, then the white T-shirt should be indispensable part of every men’s wardrobe. From it’s initial incarnation in the 19th century the white T-shirt has transformed itself from a simple undergarment to the ultimate minimalist style piece as rocked by icons like Marlon Brando and James Dean. But what makes a perfect white T-shirt?
Finding the perfect plain white t-shirt
Let’s be honest, there isn’t such a thing as the perfect white t-shirt, it all comes down to preference, but here are some pointers when looking to pick up this staple! Just to be clear, great white t-shirts come in all price ranges, the most important thing is that you should look and feel good in the Tee.
The style of your T-shirt
The crew neck versus V-neck debate… In my opinion always go for the crew neck. There is just something dodgy about that chest hair popping out of your V-neck. And with a crew neck just can’t go wrong!
Nailing the fit
Fit is everything! You can buy and wear a € 350 Dior white T-shirt, but if it’s to tight or to big you look like crap :S.
Due to the colour, a white T-shirt is pretty unforgiving when it comes to ill-fitted pieces. People can tell straight away if it fits or not. So if possible, I would advise you to try a T-shirt on before buying it online or get your best fitting T-shirt and take it’s measures. That way you’ll make sure you will get a T-shirt that is most flattering for the shape of your body, assuming your best fitting t-shirt really does fit well
In general you can apply this rule of thumb:
Skinny fit is perfect for showing of that muscular body of yours. Keep an eye on the thickness of the fabric or you will be showing more than you might like…
Slim-fit is my personal favorite as it’s designed to emphasize the V-shape of your body. Narrowing down from the shoulders to your waist. Make sure the seams line up on the edge of your shoulders and don’t have the sleeve further than the mid of your bicep.
Regular fit is that cool boxy fit we all know. The seam may drop a bit of the shoulder but that should be it. Anything from there and you will get a really weird fitting piece.
And last but not least if you want to get your Kanye on go Oversized. This is a bit more hypebeast and personally not for me.
The length of the T-shirt
If you are in to that Kanye vibe by all means go ahead and wear a tunic long shirt. Bit if you want to keep it clean and stylish I would advise you to go for a length that doesn’t go beyond a inch or two of the waistband. Easy way of checking if you are on the right path, raise those arms and wave them like you just don’t care! No beer belly showing? Good! You nailed the length.
Fabric wise I would go for 100% cotton, perfect for everyday wear and it will last you a long time. Besides the fabric you can also look at weight! Personally I wouldn’t go below 120 gram, which will give you a nice light weight shirt without being see-through. My heaviest is 280 which is really sturdy. Any thing between that and you are solid, where I like the 170gram for year round wear.
Last but not least, if you are looking for a good white Tee, these are my personal favorites.
